Treetops and branches remaining on the ground after forest operations or accumulated as a result of natural disturbances such as storm, fire, insects and diseases. Nonhazardous painted, treated, and coated wood and wood products resulting from construction, remodeling, repair, or demolition of utilities, structures, and roads.

NARA Key Accomplishments

We are advancing the development of renewable energy from sustainable forest byproducts such as slash piles and construction waste.

  • Converting wood residues from several Northwest tree species to primary sugars (used to produce aviation fuel) is at 90% conversion efficiency.
  • Douglas-fir trees can be selected in a manner that will enhance the properties that contribute to production of biofuel.
  • We developed models that help regional and local decision-makers navigate logistical hurdles in processing and transporting raw materials.

Sulfite Pretreatment

Pretreatment is the process that breaks up wood’s structure to expose the polysaccharide complexes (cellulose and hemicellulose) present within so that introduced enzymes can hydrolyze the polysaccharides and liberate the simple sugars. Pretreatment also helps liberate the lignin from the cellulose and hemicellulose making it available for use in generating valuable co-products.

Energy Literacy Matrix

We know that energy and biofuels literacy can be challenging to teach in the classroom. Energy concepts and applications are complex and holistic, and draw from all the major sciences: biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, math, Earth science, and environmental science. We also know that while researchers and educators have developed literally thousands of resources for teachers, it can be difficult to understand how resources can be used to teach different components of science, and how those resources link back to the state and national science standards that all schools follow.

NARA/AHB Comparison

As part of a national effort, the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded two $40 million grants in fall 2011 to develop a sustainable wood to biofuels industry in the Pacific Northwest. These awards created two organizations — NARA (Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance) and AHB (Advanced Hardwood Biofuels Northwest); both are collaborations between universities, government and industry.

Our project is community based, and we want your personal and professional involvement. The outreach team serves as a 2–way conduit between NARA researchers and community stakeholders. Our task is to help link the knowledge in your communities with that of NARA research to build local and regional coalitions. Our ultimate goal is rural economic development through a sustainable biojet fuel and bioproducts industry.
